About
How we became the Black Sheep
The Northeast Wisconsin Black Sheep is a non-profit founded by Veterans and other like minded individuals to help today’s youth become responsible and productive adults through athletics, mentorship and other means.
Many people have asked what is the meaning behind the name Black Sheep and why we called the organization, “The Black Sheep''.
A Black Sheep is a member of a family or group who is regarded as a disgrace to that family or group. It was in the military units that soldiers, sailors and airmen, took the name Black Sheep as a badge of honor. VMF214, called the Black Sheep Squadron, was one of the most renowned fighting units of World War 2, (1944) operating mostly in the Solomon Islands. B Company 2/127 Infantry, 32nd Separate Infantry Brigade (2005-2006) operated as the Black Sheep in Iraq and most recently there is the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, medical platoon which are currently known as the Black Sheep (2013-present). They took the notion that their command was displeased with their performance and they were unwanted and used those opinions as motivation to become the best of the best.
Chris and Frank are both veterans with Chris having retired from the US Air Force and Frank retired from the US Army. Frank served with the B co. 2/127 in Iraq as a “Black Sheep”. Chris, Frank and Kurt choose to embrace this mind set in 2017 with the league team that they coached.
At the end of the 2017 season, they knew that we needed to continue somehow with the kids we had as well as to branch out into new areas to help the community. It was in August 2017 that Chris resolved to create a non-profit organization aimed at helping today’s youth which was realized when the Northeast Wisconsin Black Sheep was founded on December 19th, 2017.
Our goal for the organization is that we plan to expand to new sports teams and age groups, always remembering the roots in which we started as well as the history of our namesake.
